You came to the Golden State for fun and relaxing getaway full of year-round California warmth and sun, surrounded by beautiful geography, like mountain vistas and breathtaking canyons. Get all you want and more with a vacation to Palm Springs and the surrounding area. There are a number of places to see to add to your itinerary. Make sure Tahquitz Canyon is one of them.
The Canyon
The canyon descends from the Riverside County San Jacinto Mountains and is a perfect addition to your adventure to San Jacinto Mountain. The floor dips down the mountains to an elevation of just 351 feet. Cutting through the canyon is Tahquitz Creek, and elevation for the canyon is measure by the creek.
Native Americans
The canyon and its history are an important part of the Agua Caliente Native American tribe. It was continually inhabited by the Native American Cahuilla people for at least 5,000 years and holds cultural significance to the tribe. The canyon is part of the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation, is overseen by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, and is open to the public. Ancient rock art and petroglyphs can be seen, as well as Native American artifacts.
Waterfall
Yes, a waterfall in the desert! The 60-foot-tall falls splashed cold water that offers a welcome and refreshing dip in the hot summer months. Visit the canyon website for a trail map that leads you to the falls.
Hiking
Hike two different loop trails for some exercise and breathtaking views. The trail to the waterfall is 1.8 miles with an elevation gain of 350 feet. It’s a steep and rocky trail, and beginners should take great caution. Remember to dress appropriately, wear sun protection, and sturdy hiking boots or shoes. There is no water or restrooms along the trail.
Visitor Center
The first place you’ll visit upon arrival is the visitor center at the entrance to the canyon. Before heading out on an adventure through the canyon, build your knowledge of the area with its educational and cultural exhibits. Browse artifacts on display, or head up to the observation deck. Before heading out, visit the theater room and learn The Legend of Tahquitz.
