You came to the Golden State for fun and relaxing getaway full of year-round California warmth and sun, surrounded by the mountains. Get all you want and more with a trip to Palm Springs. You’ll enjoy activities in town, as well as scaling one of the most well-known mountains in the area; the San Jacinto Mountains.
The Mountain
Often designated Mount San Jacinto, the peak of the mountain is an impressive 10,834 feet. It is the highest mountain in the San Jacinto mountain range, as well as in Riverside County. Its peak is considered one of the most topographically prominent peaks in the U.S. and is ranked the sixth most prominent of the 48 contiguous states. The mountains are named for one of the first Black Friars, Saint Hyacinth, which translates to San Jacinto in Spanish.
Location
The mountain is located within Mount San Jacinto State Park, in Riverside County, California, east of Los Angeles. The whole park is a sprawling 14,000 acres of wilderness, featuring a diverse population of wildlife. Hike the many trails, including up the mountain and other areas of the park.
Hiking
There are a number of backcountry and day-hike trails to explore from the park. Beginners will love exploring the Discovery Nature Trail, then moving on to something a bit tougher like the Desert View Trail. Experienced hikers will want to navigate Round Valley Loop Trail, Round Valley Meadow, or take the ultimate challenge To Wellman Divide or To San Jacinto Peak. You will need a permit for any wilderness hiking.
Know Before You Go
The park base in nearby Idyllwild is open 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. daily, while the Long Valley Ranger Station is open daily, but hours may vary. There is ample parking available, as well as restrooms, showers, and drinking water at the park.
